The Nordic Master Program in Maritime Engineering

Nordic Master in Maritime Engineering

The Nordic Five Tech university alliance is in the process of establishing an international M.Sc. study programme in Maritime Engineering, the Nordic Master in Maritime Engineering. The establishment of the programme is supported with a grant from the Nordic Council of Ministers. The cooperation is carried out by the relevant departments at:

The Nordic Master in Maritime Engineering will be based on the expertise of the participating universities within naval architecture, offshore engineering and maritime engineering. The programme targets international students wishing to profit from the Nordic Five Tech universities’ long standing tradition and competence in the field and Nordic students wishing to specialise in a specific area of expertise offered within the alliance.

The purpose with the new programme is to:

  • Provide and offer high quality education based on first principles within design, construction and operation of ship and offshore structures, including hydrostatics and stability, hydrodynamics, wave and wind loads, structural analyses, machinery etc.
  • Exploit the strong complementary specialties of the partners in e.g.:
    - CFD, yacht design
    - ship operations, decision support, emissions
    - high-speed craft, composites
    - offshore, fishery and agriculture
    - ice navigation, cruise liner design,
  • Provide highly qualified candidates for industry and research.

The Nordic Master in Maritime Engineering is being developed in line with the following features:

  • All courses will be offered in English,
  • The programme will be organized as a double degree programme,
  • Students must obtain a total of 120 ECTS credits according to a number of predefined  mobility tracks,
  • All mobility tracks will have clear competence profiles,
  • Special activities are being considered, bringing all students enrolled in the programme together, for instance short (summer) courses.

The consortium is currently working on developing agreements on admission procedures and requirements, ensuring that accreditation requirements are fulfilled and on organizing a well functioning curriculum with a good flow of courses that ensures progression (general vs. specialised courses) and enables mobility.

The programme will run parallel to the existing maritime engineering programmes of the partner universities. It will be open to national, Nordic and international students. Admission requirements will be a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering, B.Sc. in Naval Architecture or possibly a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering.

Programme Start
The program is expected to start with the autumn semester 2011. More information will come later on this homepage.

Maritime Engineering in the Nordic Countries
The Nordic countries have for centuries been strong in shipping and shipbuilding. This position has been driven by hard and sheer necessity in a harsh environment and under conditions where only the utmost care, the best qualifications, the hardest work and the highest degree of innovation could secure survival, physically and economically. On the other hand, those conditions have been crucial in the development of the high quality shipping that is characteristic for the Nordic countries. Today, people in the Nordic countries design, build and operate large fleets of modern, highly sophisticated ships and offshore units of all kinds, and there is a large industry of suppliers of equipment.
